Carbon Fiber Consolidation, Moulding & Curing

A source-grounded overview of wet layup, vacuum bagging, prepreg/autoclave, RTM, compression moulding and filament winding.

Carbon-fiber laminate and resin preparation in the production environment

PROCESS 01

Wet layup

In a wet-layup route, liquid resin is applied to dry reinforcement before or during placement in the mould. It is a different process from prepreg and resin-injection routes, and resin distribution and void control are important quality considerations.

PROCESS 02

Vacuum bagging & infusion

Vacuum bagging uses a sealed bag and reduced pressure to consolidate the laminate during cure. In infusion variants, dry reinforcement is placed first and vacuum helps draw resin through the reinforcement package.

PROCESS 03

Prepreg / oven / autoclave

Prepreg carries a partially cured matrix in the reinforcement before layup. High-performance parts may be vacuum-bagged and cured in an oven or autoclave, where pressure and temperature help consolidate the laminate and reduce trapped air.

PROCESS 04

Resin transfer moulding (RTM)

RTM places dry reinforcement inside a closed two-sided mould before liquid resin is introduced. Wikipedia describes RTM and its vacuum-assisted variants as suitable for high-performance composite components and medium-volume production.

PROCESS 05

Compression moulding

Compression moulding uses matched tooling pressed together around a prepared reinforcement-and-resin charge. It can support faster cycle times, but fiber-direction control differs from continuous-fiber layup routes.

PROCESS 06

Filament winding

Filament winding places continuous reinforcement around a mandrel or core and is particularly suited to shapes that can be built through controlled winding paths. It is a distinct process from panel layup and closed-mould body-part production.

Before production

Fitment is part of the carbon-fiber specification.

The vehicle name alone is not enough for a custom composite order. The exact interfaces, finish direction and supplied component schedule should be confirmed before production.

OWNSILENT product scope

Customer-facing category, programme and supplied component definition.

OWNSILENT project image

Existing project or manufacturing media already held in the OWNSILENT library.

Visual description

A description of what is visibly shown without claiming an unsupported manufacturing step.

Fitment confirmation

Vehicle-specific details that require VIN, photos, mounting or interface review.

VIN & exact vehicle

Confirm model year, market specification, body style and current exterior configuration.

Current vehicle photos

Front, side, rear and the exact component area should be documented before quotation.

Material & finish

Dry carbon, forged-carbon appearance, exposed weave, painted zones and clear finish must be defined.

Interfaces

Confirm sensors, cameras, lamps, grilles, exhaust outlets, undertrays and adjacent panels.

Mounting & trial fit

Brackets, hardware, panel gaps and left/right alignment should be reviewed before final finishing.

Approved supplied scope

The final component schedule should state each supplied panel, trim piece, mesh, bracket and hardware item.
